North Vancouver railing FAQs

How high does my deck or stair railing need to be?
Under the BC Building Code, guards on a house generally need to be at least 36" (900 mm) high where the deck is 5'11" (1.8 m) or less above the ground, and 42" (1070 mm) when it's higher – which covers most raised decks on sloped North Shore lots. Openings must be small enough that a 4" (100 mm) sphere can't pass through.

City or District of North Vancouver – does it matter?
Yes, for permits. They are separate municipalities with their own building departments. Replacing an existing railing usually doesn't need a permit, but new decks and major changes often do, so check with the City or District for your address. We'll supply the railing details your permit needs.

Will glass block my view?
No – that's why most of our North Shore clients choose it. Clear tempered glass with slim aluminum posts keeps the view open while meeting code. Frameless-look glass shows even less frame.

How long does installation take?
Once materials are ready, most homes are installed in one or two days. Custom-cut glass adds time for fabrication after we measure.
